Juno

Michael Cera and Ellen Page star in Fox Searchlight's JunoWhen the first few scenes of Juno started to play on screen, and the unashamed naked bodies of two supposedly young kids popped up, my mother was aghast. She took one glance at the tv and started her barrage of comments that this isn’t a proper movie for children to watch, what the heck am I watching, that this is how we get ‘ideas’, and that it’s, uh, I actually forgot already. I tuned her out after that.

Fact is, had things been different in our house when it comes to discussing ‘adult matters’ such as sex, it would have been a little more enlightening than getting your information from friends. You can say we are the conservative type of household and issues like these are not exactly discussed.

Anyway, about the movie. I liked it. Ellen Page’s acting was so real and Michael Cera was the typical lost nerdy boy that he’s made famous in Arrested Development. I think I appreciated the movie more than I expected because of some events in Juno’s pregnancy life that somehow made a parallelism with mine. I couldn’t help but cry during the part when she was driving home from Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner’s house after learning some really bad news which pretty much means that her problem really wasn’t solved, so she pulled up by the high way and just cried.

I remember myself 2 years ago when crying while driving home would usually be a routine for me. Yeah, blame it on the overload of hormones. But it was also because I had to face a lot of tough decisions back then that would eventually change my life. It’s tough really, trying to go at it alone. And Juno’s experience had been mercifully bearable because of her super supportive parents. Same goes for me. I am thankful that I had my family and friends back then, and I still have them now.

Juno was a brave kid. I doubt if I could’ve pulled it off like she did. This is a teenage reality-bites, no-fuss kind of movie that takes a brave hit on that subject in the point of view of a teenager. you know, S-E-X. ;)

Coincidentally, I have actually watched this last night out of boredom on my DVD player (been a week without touching it) and surprisingly not a bad movie (Little Miss Sunshine kind of) like what reviews said it was.

However, I was lost with the nerdy conversations there, perhaps that’s probably how youth talks these days, di ko na dig masyado. Well the hospital scene was kind of sad, it’s not easy to just give your baby for adoption (because you made a mistake and pregnant at 16) and end up like that?

A Baby-Mama drama really that young Mom’s (like you) can easily relate to but in reality not all are as brave as Juno in the movie.

naku k, tumatanda na yata tayo because yeah, i found the kids in juno’s attitudes a little bit too nonchalant for me, considering they were talking about being pregnant at 16. i also had a hard time accepting the fact that juno was so made up on giving away her baby. thats probably how it is in the US. here in the philippines parang it’s so unheard of. kaya madaming teenage moms ang napapabayaan na ang studies.

as for me, while mia happened when i was bit older na, i could still relate to the whirlwind of emotions associated with being pregnant and dealing with the dad, and stuff like that. oh well. :)

Been watching a lot of movies lately and Juno is one that I would rate to become classic alongside films like Parenthood (Steve Martin) and Dead Poet Society. What I like about it was that there were no religious overtures injected on the subject. Just a matter-of-fact being human and weighing in your options.

She was methodical in facing her problems and of course having that extra layer of friends, supportive dad and feisty step-mom made it a bit bearable for her. I think the ultra-sound operator personifies the sentiments of the ‘madla’ but - she was quickly put in place.

you’re right about the classic and un-religious treatment of the topic. i haven’t watched DPS (yeah, im lame, hehe) so really wouldn’t know about the comparison. but it’s still a classic for me because of the script. the lines are so witty :)
but i was also kinda cringing in my seat with the way premarital sex and teenage pregnancy was just as lightly treated. i think im going to be really afraid for my kid now. :)

havent seen it yet, alam mo naman… sine time is supposedly a huge event over here in my household.

pero a lot of people have been saying that ellen page should have won an oscar for her performance. i couldn’t comment on it since hindi ko pa nga napapanood.

i guess, this is the reality of the kids’ awareness re sex, especially here. bigla nga akong natakot na babae ang anak ko, haha! anyway, let’s just cross our bridges when we get there. :)

im no judge either when it comes to best whatevers awards. but i think she did a great job. ako rin, natakot ako for mia. parang gusto ko nalang tumira sa bundok when she turns 13. haha. gusto mo isama si ninna? :)

I totally agree how we take sex topics in our culture. Ang hirap tuloy i-discuss.

Ako kaya, pag may anak na at nagtanong sakin kung ano ang masturbation, pano ko kaya sasagutin? Hehe.

I think this movie was taken from a Korean Movie, much like The Lake House (tama ba yun) by Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock from the Korean Movie “Il Mare”. Nangongopya narin pla mga westerns:D

sometimes i think if we’re shooting ourselves on the foot by being too conservative about discussing things like these. tingnan mo mga kabataan ngayon, no?

haha, good luck. pag may nahanap ka ng sure-fire way na sagutin yan without being to graphic, sabihin mo sakin. haha.

    talaga, what korean movie?
